- Project ARTEMIS
Project ARTEMIS was a project undertaken by the
United States Navy in the 1960s, whose goal was to produce aSonar system that could detectsubmarine s at long range.Robert A. Frosch , the 5th administrator of NASA, was Technical Director of the project. [NASA. [http://history.nasa.gov/Biographies/frosch.html Robert A. Frosch biography] .]USNS Mission Capistrano (T-AO-112) was modified to carry an ultra‑high‑powered sonar transducer array that is five stories high and several tons in weight. The transducer can be raised and lowered like a centerboard through the ship’s bottom. Upon completion of her conversion, she joined Project “Artemis”, a project designed to ultimately produce a system that can detect submarines at long range.cite web|title="Mission Capistrano"|work=Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships |url=http://www.history.navy.mil/danfs/m11/mission_capistrano.htm|accessdate=March 31|accessyear=2006]References
