Cork Junior Hurling Championship

Cork Junior Hurling Championship

The Cork Junior Hurling Championship is the third tier championship for hurling clubs in Cork. The winners of this championship compete in the Cork Intermediate Hurling Championship in the following year. This championship is often considered the most difficult championship to win, since more teams play at this grade than at the higher levels. Teams play in their own divisional championship first, and then the winners of these play for the county title. Seven divisions (Avondhu, Carbery, Carrigdhoun, Duhallow, Imokilly, Muskerry and Seandun) contribute teams. The Beara division does not have a hurling championship. Between the years of 1895 and 1909, this competition was known as the seconds championship. Thus many of the winners of that period are the second teams of teams competing in the Cork Senior Hurling Championship.

The winners represent Cork in the Munster Junior Club Hurling Championship.

The Cup

The winning team is presented with the John Quirke Cup. A Blackrock clubman, Johnny Quirke played for Cork during the 1930/40s and was part of the great four-in-a-row team. Regarded as one of the best hurlers Cork ever produced, He served as a Cork selector for many years and was deeply involved with his beloved Blackrock.
