Alderholt is a large
village andcivil parish in theEast Dorset district ofDorset ,England ; situated 3 miles west ofFordingbridge . The local travel links are located 11 miles from the village toSalisbury railway station and 9 miles toBournemouth International Airport . Also, the main road running through the village is the B3078 connecting Alderholt toFordingbridge andShaftesbury . The village has a population of 3,113 according to the 2001 Census. The village is served by a convenience store, a pet store, Veterinary clinic and part time GP surgery. The village pub is the Churchill Arms.
There are two churches in the village, The Congregational Church and St James' C of E. St James' summer fete is notable for being visited each year by one of the friendly giants for which the area is famed. Although usually shy, the giants are especially partial to the music of a local fairground organ that is wheeled out for the occasion. Rumours that the giants are related to the better-known (and now captive) giants of Salisbury are unconfirmed.
The village has its own large recreation ground with a sports and social club, two tennis courts, skate board "half-pipe" and a fully modernised and well equipped children's play area.
Until 1964, the village was served by a railway station named Daggons Road, situated to the west of the village, and on a line connecting to
Fordingbridge andSalisbury to the north, andVerwood and Wimborne to the south.Postal deliveries to Alderholt are frequently to be found floating around Adershot.
