Deakin University School of Law

Deakin University School of Law

The Deakin University School of Law operates at Geelong, Melbourne and Warrnambool campuses. It is part of Deakin University.

Deakin’s LLB degree has a strong commercial focus, with an international orientation, enabling Deakin law graduates to undertake legal work in a wide range of settings whether in Australia or abroad.

The Practical Legal Skills program equips graduates with the knowledge, skills and attributes to practice law while the Professional Work Experience requirement enriches their legal education. Deakin law graduates emerge with a broad technical competency, a specialisation in commercial law and an appreciation of how the law operates in practice.[1]

Deakin Law School has been running an intensive winter semester program at China University of Political Science and Law for 13 years. This program is also open to students from other law schools around the country and is seen as a useful introduction to Chinese commercial law as Australia and China's trading relationship becomes closer.[citation needed]

Publications

The School of Law has two publications in which academics, students, members of the judiciary and practising lawyers are invited to contribute.

Deakin Law Students' Society

All Deakin University law students, whether at Burwood, Geelong, Warrnambool or off-campus, are represented by the Deakin Law Students' Society (DLSS). It was formed on the Geelong Campus in 1993, and with the growth of the School of Law, it expanded to the Burwood Campus. The role of both chapters is to offer law students the opportunities to get the most out of their time at university, including offering career advice and throwing social events.

Both Chapters have their own committees which run independently from each other. Both committees do however share funds, information and procedures. The Deakin Law Students' Society is an active member of the Australian Law Students' Association (ALSA), a founding member of the Victorian Council of Law Students’ Societies (VCLSS) and the Victorian Women Law Students' Collective (VWLSC).[citation needed]
