Total Wreck, Arizona

Total Wreck, Arizona

Total Wreck, located in Pima County, Arizona, is a defunct ghost town of the United States.

History

Total Wreck was discovered by John L. Dillon in 1875. The town was dubbed Total Wreck by Dillon, because he thought that the mine that was erected in 1881 was on a ledge that looked like "A Total Wreck." The town Post Office was established in August 12, 1881 and was discontinued on November 1, 1890. The town's population peaked at around 200 residents in 1881. The structures at the time consisted of fifty houses, three stores, three hotels, four saloons, a butcher shop, and a lumber yard.

Legends

A popular legend of Total Wreck was the story of a man who was involved in a shootout. He was struck in the chest by a bullet from the other assailant, but remained alive because he was saved by the love letters he had in his pocket. The letters supposedly absorbed the bullet, saving the man's life. Legend says he married the woman to whom he was writing in the letters.
