Engineer In Training

Engineer In Training

=Canada=

In Canada, an Engineer In Training (EIT) is someone who has obtained a degree from an accredited institution that qualifies for registration with one of the provincial or territorial engineering professional associations, but has not yet achieved the additional requirements (like relevant supervised work experience) to become accredited as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).

United States

In the United States of America, an Engineer In Training (EIT) is someone who has qualified for, taken and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (FE exam). Graduation from an ABET-accredited degree program may speed-up the certification process but an ABET-accredited degree is not necessary. An EIT may also be known as an Engineering Intern (EI) in some regions.

Once the FE exam has been passed, a licensed EIT is then certified to work in an engineering profession. Upon completing a certain amount of work experience under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) as determined by a state-level licensing board, an EIT is then eligible to take the P.E. exam. If an EIT passes the PE exam, they then become a certified Professional Engineer.

While being a certified EIT may help in obtaining an engineering job, it is not typically required to do engineering work. All work performed by an EIT must still be checked and certified by a P.E.
