viroid is a type species from the genus "Pelamoviroid ", which belongs to the family "Avsunviroidae ". This family is characterized as having chloroplastic viroids withhammerhead ribozyme s.cite journal |author=Flores Ricardo, Delgado Sonia, Rodio María-Elena, Ambrós Silvia, Hernández Carmen, di Serio Francesco |title=Peach latent mosaic viroid: not so latent |journal=Molecular Plant Pathology |volume=7 |issue=4 |pages=209–221(13) |year=2006 |doi=10.1111/j.1364-3703.2006.00332.x] Peach latent mosaic viroid is a 336-351nt circularRNA which has a branched formation. This branched formation is stabilised by apseudoknot between two kissing loops. Peach latent mosaic viroid was first described in the 1980s in Spain by a group of scientists.cite web |url=http://nrsp5.prosser.wsu.edu/PLMVd%20statement.htm |title=PEACH LATENT MOSAIC VIROID DECLARATION |accessdate=2007-06-05] It is present in allpeach and nectarine producing areas of the world including Europe, Asia, North America and South America and the frequency of naturally occurring infection is high. Before the development of symptoms the disease is latent in peach trees for approximately 5-7 years.cite journal |author=Hadidi, A., Giunchedi, L., Shamloul, A. M., Poggi-Pollini, C., and Amer, M. A. |title=Occurrence of peach latent mosaic viroid in stone fruits and its transmission with contaminated blades |journal=Plant Dis. |volume=81 |pages=154–158 |year=1997 |url=http://www.apsnet.org/pd/PDFS/1996/1205-04R.PDF |doi=10.1094/PDIS.1997.81.2.154 ] The symptoms of the disease includenecrosis of buds, delayed shoot development, necrotic branches, premature ageing of trees, flower streaking, ripening deformations, enlarged rounded stones, circular discoloured areas on the fruit skin and in some cases mosaic, blotch, vein banding or calico appearance on infected leaves. Peach latent mosaic viroid is horizontally spread from plant to plant across a field by propagation of infected buds, pruning tools andgreen peach aphid s. Vertical transmission of peach latent mosaic viroid through seeds can not occur.References
