Three randomized controlled trials of a classical TCM treatment for
breech birth (i.e., buttocks-first orientation of the baby, which is much riskier than head-first) were studied and analyzed in a Cochrane review. One of the three trials showed thatmoxibustion at acupoint BL 67 (aka UB 67), located at the tip of the fifth toe, reduced the need for external cephalic version compared to placebo and decreased the use of oxytocin for women who had vaginal deliveries. The analyzing authors concluded that* "There is insufficient evidence to support the use of moxibustion to correct a breech presentation. Moxibustion may be beneficial in reducing the need for ECV, and decreasing the use of ocytocin, however there is a need for well-designed randomised controlled trials to evaluate moxibustion for breech presentation which report on clinically relevant outcomes as well as the safety of the intervention."cite journal |author=Coyle ME, Smith CA, Peat B |title=Cephalic version by moxibustion for breech presentation |journal=Cochrane database of systematic reviews (Online) |volume= |issue=2 |pages=CD003928 |year=2005 |pmid=15846688 |doi=10.1002/14651858.CD003928.pub2]
