Buxton, North Carolina

Buxton, North Carolina

Buxton is an unincorporated community of nearly 1,500 people on Hatteras Island (part of the Outer Banks) near Cape Hatteras. It is located in Dare County in the U.S. state of North Carolina. North Carolina Highway 12 links the community to other Outer Banks communities such as Avon, Frisco, and Hatteras. Buxton is most famous for being the location of Cape Hatteras Light, and prides itself as being the home of the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club.

Recreation

Watersports are common on both the Pamlico Sound side and the Atlantic Ocean side of the community. Proximity to the convergence of the Labrador Current and the Gulf Stream result in the largest surf available on the East Coast. On the protected soundside of the island, watersports such as windsurfing, kayaking, kiteboarding, and swimming are all readily available and accessible.

Fishing is a major source of recreation as well as revenue in Buxton. Anglers often converge on "The Point" to reel in record-setting catches from many fish varieties.

Exploration of the nature trails found in Buxton Woods gives sight-seers contact with a convergence of plant and animal life found in both typically warmer and typically cooler climates. Trails can be from moderately easy to very difficult. The most challenging trails offer vistas on naturally-formed dunefields protecting Buxton Woods. The most family-oriented trails bring visitors to fresh-water ponds and their associated flora and fauna.

Buxton is known as the best Red Drum sport fishing area in the United States.fact|date=September 2007
