John 'Johnny' Taylor

John 'Johnny' Taylor

John Taylor (died 1898) was a Sierra Leonean trader from the Krio ethnic group who was working in the Northern protectorate (Northern Province, Sierra Leone) during the 1890s. He moved from Wilberforce, Sierra Leone, a neighborhood of Freetown and established a store in Northern Sierra Leone. He was married to Tabitha Mariah Taylor (the daughter of the Reverend Charles Brown of Kissy Village church) and had a five year old child-Petan Mary Taylor-when he was killed by indigenous Sierra Leoneans (who were mustered by Bai Bureh) during the war in 1898. The indigenous people killed Taylor because they believed he supported the British in their 'hut tax' on all houses.
