History
It was opened in 1902 as West Bromwich Municipal Secondary School at the West Bromwich Institute on Lodge Lane. It was funded by Sir George Kenrick. It became West Bromwich Grammar School in 1944, and moved to new buildings on Clarkes Lane in 1964. It was only a grammar school at this site for five years, becoming a comprehensive school in September 1969 when West Bromwich borough council (which merged with Warley five years later to form Sandwell) abolished grammar and secondary modern schools in the area. The school now has some 1,500 pupils including sixth formers on its roll.
Admissions
It serves the Charlemont, Tantany, Hateley Heath and Stone Cross areas of West Bromwich. The Sixth Form College has over two-hundred students and are the largest Sixth Form in the Sandwell area. Miss J. Barr is the current head of the Sixth Form, Mr Jones is her deputy. The current head teacher is Mr Gary Hill.
Currently there is a local teenage anti under-age drink campaign involving the West Midlands Police and local schools including also feeder schools, as the local area has a long-running problem with drug abuse and bullying alcoholism.
Academic performance
The School is one of the most improved secondary schools in Sandwell. The school has an exceptional pupil centered approach to it pastoral care and was proud to receive the "Every Child Matters Quality Mark" at Silver Level in July 2009. The Quality Mark is run by Ormiston Education, a not for profit education organisation, working largely in school improvement and development.
