Tobin Prinz
AlPrinzhorn Dance School are a band comprising Tobin Prinz and Suzi Horn. Their music is sparse, uncompromising and idiosyncratic.
Location
Prinz and Horn work from a disused church in the UK where they make all of their music and visual art. Up until now they have recorded everything themselves as well as scripting and shooting all of their own videos.
Debut release
In 2006 Prinz and Horn signed a recording contract with the New York record label
DFA Records [ [http://www.factmagazine.co.uk/da/42522 PRINZHORN DANCE SCHOOL: Fact Magazine ] ] . Their debut release for the label was a self recorded and self produced 7-inch single featuring the tracks "You Are The Space Invader" and "Eat, Sleep" which is now highly sought after as it was limited to 500 copies only.Debut album
Prinz and Horn recorded their debut album in isolation, in a rented barn in
Sussex , having already written the songs in the disused chapel building they call home, also entirely on their own. They wrote and played everything on the recordings although they use a drummer in a 3 piece line-up for live shows. The album was sebsequently mixed in New York with The DFA and was released onAugust 13 2007 in the UK (via EMI) and onAugust 27 2007 in North America on DFA Records.Prinz and Horn sent a message to fans in April 2008 stating that "they will not be working with EMI anymore". No news is currently available regarding who the band will work with on future releases.
Live performances
The band are building a strong following partly due to their impressive, intense live shows. They have completed UK and European tour dates, although their American tour was famously cancelled due to visa problems. They headlined the Exp Circ. tent at
Offset Festival in 2008, bringing the event to a close as a 2-piece – the first time they have performed without a separate drummer.Relationship with the media and fans
The band are known to be reclusive, with few interviews given, and their own official website, up until recently, has rarely featured any images of their faces. They prefer the isolation of their working space, writing and recording privately in their own austere and peculiar way. They have been accused of shunning the limelight and criticised for their refusal to have a myspace site. However, they communicate with fans regularly in their own way, via their own website and sending messages to people who sign up to the bands mailing list via the website. On the 26th April, 2008, Prinz and Horn invited the entire mailing list to attend a party at Suzi Horn's Brighton flat. The party passed without major incident although it caused traffic problems in the local area and some minor damage to the property.
Recycling clause
Negotiations with EMI (who licensed the debut album in the UK) were protracted while the band insisted upon the inclusion of special recycling clauses, ensuring that all their record sleeves, CD sleeves and promotional material be produced using recycled materials. All releases to date have used recycled paperstock.
Name
It is believed they have taken their name from Dr
Hans Prinzhorn , who collected art by mentally ill patients under his care.Discography
