Bristol ,England in the Kingswood area and is named afterJohn Cabot , an explorer who set out from Bristol and reachedthe Americas in 1497.Information
The Academy has approximately 1100
student s, about 220 of whom are in thesixth form . It has built a new £1.4 million Study Centre constructed with environmentally friendly materials and methods, for the sixth form pupils. It was opened in December]2004 by Mr Colin Green, President of Defence Aerospace at Rolls Royce.The Principal is Adam Williams. The Academy is part of an Academy Federation led by David Carter and Nick Jones.
In year 7, the Academy operates the Cabot Competency Curriculum, which was developed at the academy. It focuses on 'learning to learn'.
Term system and school day
The Academy runs on a 5-term system, each of around 7-9 weeks, with 2 weeks of holiday in between.
The Academy day starts at 8.30am, and ends at 3.30 pm.
"Student Voice"
The Academy has a "Student Voice" system, set up at the beginning of the
Academic year 2005–2006, which allows the students to give their opinions on issues related to the academy, such as sanctions and rewards, and the construction of new buildings. One student from each tutor group is chosen each term, which (for those in Year 7 when it began) should mean each student is picked at least once. The chosen student becomes the representative of their tutor group, collecting opinions from their classmates to relay to the meeting.Trivia
In February 2007, Pop Band McFly visited to the school in aid of Comic Relief, to talk to students about their recent visit to Uganda.
The college scenes from E4 teen comedy/drama series 'Skins' were filmed at John Cabot Academy. The school is attended by one of the show's stars,
Larissa Wilson who playsJal Fazer .The school has also had visits from olympic heroes runner Dame Kelly Holmes and diver Tom Daley
