Area code 819

Area code 819 is an area code for western Quebec, Canada, including the Quebec portion of the capital region, Ottawa-Gatineau, and the entire Hudson Strait and Ungava Bay coastlines of Quebec. It bordered 514 (Montreal) before 450 was created and 403 before 867 was created to cover the entire Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut. 819 was created in a flash-cut, sometime during 1957 split from a portion of 514, while the northernmost portion of 514 was transferred to 418. Late in the 1970s, the northern portions of 418 along James, Hudson and Ungava Bays and Hudson Strait was assigned to 819 as exchanges in that area began to receive direct distance dialing.

From the late 1970s until 1997, 819 extended one-eighth of the way around the world, from the 45th parallel at Stanstead, Quebec to the North Pole by including much of the Northwest Territories along with most of western Quebec. (The Yukon Territory and the western portion of the Northwest Territories were originally covered by area code 403, which now covers only the southern half of Alberta, including Calgary.)

The incumbent local exchange carriers in 819 are Bell Canada, Telebec and some independent companies.
