The Eritrean Free Zones Authority is the agency charged with the development and oversight of the Free Zones in Eritrea. It offers two economic zones in Massawa and Assab, both coastal cities. The Authority is currently under the supervision of Araya Tsegay, the CEO. The Free Zones nominally opened in September 2006 although, it was announced in 2001.
The Massawa Free Zone offers the Massawa International Airport, as well as seaport access. Also, is a salt processing facility and oil refinery.
Further expansions of the Free Zones Authority are planned, as they become viable.
