PMX (technology)

PMX (technology)

PMX is a technology used by The Weather Network to generate local weather information to 1200 different centres across Canada.

They consist of computers installed at cable company headends that generate text and graphics that are keyed over TWN's national broadcasts. The network began using the systems in 1997, replacing the customized Weather STAR 4000 systems that they originally used.

PMX has had criticism since their data is keyed over a video feed; sometimes the data has been known to be out of scale. For example, the data generated by the computers would sometimes be outside the boxes that would be part of TWN's national feed.

PMX is used to generate local forecasts, highway and ski conditions, pollen and UV conditions. PMX would be used to generate warnings and alerts with the proposed "All Channel Alert" system.
