Sartorias-deles

Sartorias-deles is the name of the fictitious world that is the setting for many of the books by Sherwood Smith. It is one of four inhabited planets in the Erhal system. [http://www.sff.net/people/sherwood/writing/background.html Official Sherwood Smith Site: Writing: Sartorias-deles ] ]

According to Smith, humans first arrived on Sartorias-deles through world gates untold millennia ago. Occasionally, still more humans arrive. However, in non-canon commentaries the author informs readers that most of the early human history on Sartorias-deles has been lost since the so-called Fall of Sartor approximately 4000 years before the events of the books such as "Senrid". Smith does indeed appear to intend these humans be portrayed as having been Terrans prior to their immigration to the Erhal system. For example, in numerous references throughout the stories, they appear to have brought with them species such as domesticated animals and many foods such as coffee, rice, the tomato"Wren to the Rescue", page 38, paragraph 7 (2004 Firebird edition)] and concepts such as the seven-day week. Smith's website indicates that the in the background story to the books, not all satellites of Erhal were inhabited by sentient life-forms prior to the arrival of humans; four of its six worlds have been colonized by humans or human-like beings.Fact|date=May 2008

Geography

*The "Southern Hemisphere" of Sartorias-deles is the setting for the Inda trilogy. [ [https://www.sff.net/people/sherwood/inda.html Inda] ] The southern continent, called the Sartoran continent, reaches round almost 65% of the planet. There is another continent in the south, a long, smallish one called Toar. In the north are Sky Island (a misnomer used by the southerners whose storyline is being followed; Drael, which comes down to a point almost touching Sartor, carved away over millions of years by a powerful current half the year and Goerael.

Wren's World

Apparently Smith actually intends that Sartorias-deles be actually a separate world from the world the Wren books are set in. [ [http://www.sff.net/people/Sherwood/writing/wren.html Wren's World ] ] Smith has described Wren's world as a very simplified version of Sartorias-deles. It is "the 'publisher safe' version because YA 'rules' were very, very constrained in 1968, when [she] first wrote Wren." [ [http://community.livejournal.com/athanarel/123964.html?thread=1732412#t1732412 athanarel: quotes ] ] While the true canon name of Wren's world is not known, it may also include "-deles", considering that the word's definition is "a world with magic" Fact|date=June 2008. Additionally, if the assertion is correct that Samar Djur is the name of the main continent of Wren's world, then if the same naming convention is applied for multiple satellites of Erhal, "Djurias-deles" would be the name of Wren's world. On the other hand, with Djur being used in both "Samar Djur" and "Sveran Djur", Djur could simply mean "continent", or even "land of", much like "-stan" in Arabic. In such an eventuality, "Samarias-deles" would be a more likely candidate.

Geography

* Wren's World has three major continents, several subcontinents (too big to be islands) and numerous archipelagos.
* Wren lives on the continent Samar Djur (not to be confused with Sveran DjurWren's Quest, pg. 62] ), about which very little information is available.
*The Magic Council, which attempts to be a sort of moderator organization for magic schools across this world, is mentioned as being located on an eastern continent.

The Wren-series books portray the politics of Wren's world as highly similar to that of Earth's Europe in the middle-ages, with the main exception being a much clearer division between good and evil motivations.
