"The Wizard of Gore" is a 1970 splatter film directed by Herschell Gordon Lewis. It stars Ray Sager and Judy Cler. It was filmed in Chicago in 1968, but not released until October 23, 1970. This film was remade in 2006 starring Crispin Glover as Montag the Magnificent.

Plot

The film is about a magician called Montag the Magnificent who performs a show where he selects female volunteers and appears to put swords, drills, and such through them. They walk away completely unharmed and everyone applauds, but then they show up somewhere else later, dead of the same injuries they sustained in the magic show.

Influence

"The Wizard of Gore" has been a source of inspiration for several musical groups. Doom metal band Electric Wizard uses a sample from the film in the song "Wizards Of Gore" from their EP "Supercoven". Death metal band Impetigo used a sample from the film as an intro for the song "Wizard Of Gore" from their album "Horror of the Zombies". Thrash metal band Rigor Mortis has a song entitled "Wizard of Gore" off their album "Rigor Mortis". The soundtrack is sampled by the band Diamond Bullocks in their self-titled debut album. Also, a segment of the film was sampled by experimental electronica outfit Coil for the track "Further" from "Stolen and Contaminated Songs".

"The Wizard of Gore" has also influenced later film and television. The film is referenced and a scene is shown in the 2007 film "Juno", and a similar plotline was used in an episode of the CW series "Reaper".
