Edward Burlingame Hill (
September 9 ,1872 ,Cambridge, Massachusetts -July 9 ,1960 ,Francestown, New Hampshire ) was an Americancomposer .After graduating from
Harvard University in 1894, Hill studied music in Boston withJohn Knowles Paine ,Frederick Field Bullard ,Margaret Ruthven Lang , andGeorge Elbridge Whiting , and inParis withCharles Marie Widor . Finally, on his return to Boston, he pursued studies withGeorge Whitefield Chadwick . He joined the Harvard faculty in 1908, remaining until his retirement in 1940. His later-famous pupils includedLeonard Bernstein ,Roger Sessions ,Elliott Carter ,Walter Piston , andVirgil Thomson . Among a range of other works, Hill wrote four symphonies, foursymphonic poem s, twoorchestra lpantomime s, two orchestralsuite s, twopiano concerto s, oneviolin concerto , onecor anglais concerto,chamber music ,jazz studies for twopiano s, one choralode , and onecantata .External links
