September 6 ,1905 inHanover –December 4 ,1979 inWalnut Creek, California ), was a Germanphysicist , most well known for his improvement ofHans Geiger 's counter forionizing radiation , now known as theGeiger-Müller tube .Walther Müller studied
physics ,chemistry andphilosophy at theUniversity of Kiel . In 1925 he became the firstPhD student of Hans Geiger, who had just got a professorship in Kiel. Their work onionization ofgas es bycollision lead to the invention of the Geiger-Müller counter, a now indispensable tool for measuringradioactive radiation .After some time as professor at the
University of Tübingen he worked for the rest of his professional life as industrial physicist (i. e. a physicist working in industrialR&D ) inGermany , then as advisor for theAustralia n Ministry ofEconomy , and then as industrial physicist in theUnited States , where he also founded a company to manufactureGeiger-Mueller tube s.
