Takht Singh of Jodhpur

Takht Singh of Jodhpur

Maharajadhiraja Maharaja Shri Takhtsinhji Karansinhji Sahib Bahadur, better known under his later style Raj Rajeshwar Saramad-i-Rajha-i-Hindustan Maharajadhiraja Maharaja Shri Takht Singhji Sahib Bahadur was first the regent (1839-1841) and the final Maharaja of Ahmednagar 1841-1843 and then, once he ceded Ahmednagar to Idar, was recognised as Maharaja of Jodhpur (1843-1873).

He was born in Ahmednagar in 1819 as the second son of Maharajadhiraja Maharaja Shri Karansinhji Sagramsinhji Sahib Bahadur, the Maharaja of Ahmednagar 1798-1835. He had little prospects of ascending the throne, yet after the death of his brother, Maharajadhiraja Maharaja Shri Prithisinhji Karansinhji Sahib Bahadur in 1839 he became the regent over the whole state and was this until the birth of his brothers son, Maharajadhiraja Maharaja Shri Balwantsinhji Prithisinhji Sahib Bahadur, who was proclaimed ruler at Birth. Takhtsinhji then became the new ruler's regent and served as such until the death of his nephew on 23rd September 1841, when he became the Maharaja of Ahmadnagar.

However, two years into his reign in 1843, Raj Rajeshwar Saramad-i-Rajha-i-Hindustan Maharajadhiraja Maharaja Shri Man Singhji Sahib Bahadur, the Maharaja of Jodhpur died. He was persuaded by his widows to take the succession (he was a member of the Rathor dynasty through his grandfather, Maharajadhiraja Maharaja Shri Sagramsinhji Sahib Bahadur, the son of Maharajadhiraja Maharaja Shri Sagramsinhji Sahib Bahadur a Maharaja of Idar, who himself was the son of Shri Maharajadhiraja Maharaja Shri Anandsinhji Sahib Bahadur, the first Maharaja of Idar and a younger son of Rajeshwar Maharaja Shri Ajit Singhji Sahib, Raja of Jodhpur), however, he had to cede Ahmednagar back to the state of Idar to be recognised in Jodhpur by the British.

So, on 29th October 1843, he ascended the Gadi at the Sringar Chowki in Mehrangarh.

Later in his life, he served in the Indian Mutiny of 1857, and ïn 1862 he received a "sanad" of adoption .

During his life he married thirty wives, his first wife being Shri Bada Ranawatiji Maharani Gulab Kanwarji Maji Sahiba, daughter of Thakur Shri Rod Singh of Dhamotar .

He died in Jodhpur on 13th February 1873 and was crematated here at Jaswant Thara .

He was succeeded by his firstborn son Raj Rajeshwar Saramad-i-Rajha-i-Hindustan Maharajadhiraja Maharaja Shri Jaswant Singhji II Sahib Bahad in Jodhpur, while his thirdborn, Maharajadhiraja Maharaja Shri Sir Pratap Singhji Sahib Bahadur would go on to become the Maharaja of Idar.

His firstborn daughter, Maharajkumari Shri Chand Kanwar Baiji Lall Sahiba, would be married to Saramad-i-Rajha-i-Hindustan, Raj Rajeshwar Shri Maharajadhiraja Maharaja Sir Sawai Ram Singh II. Bahadur, the Maharaja of Jaipur.
