Celtic mythology , Camulus or Camulos was the god of war of theRemi , a Celtic tribe, who lived in the area of today'sBelgium . Traces of his cult are also found in Britain. The townCamulodunum (now Colchester) in Essex, was named after him; it has been claimed that this was the basis for the legendary cityCamelot . The Romans identified Camulus with Mars, their god of war.Cunobelinus (Shakespeare'sCymbeline ), chief of the Catuvellauni and called "Britannorum rex" by Roman historianSuetonius , made Camulodunum his capital after defeating the localTrinobantes . He established a mint there and coins bearing his head are still found occasionally in the area. After his death about 42 AD, his sons fell out with Rome and gave the emperorClaudius the excuse to try to place Britain under Roman rule.Popular culture
