disease caused by the loss or weakening of theligaments that help to hold thespleen .Background
Wandering spleen is most commonly diagnosed in young
children cite web | first=Malak | last=Hasan Alawi | coauthors=Ahmad Khalifa, Sami Hassan Bana | title=Wandering Spleen: A Challenging Diagnosis | format = PDF | publisher=Open Publishing | date=October-December 2005 | work=Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences | url=http://www.pjms.com.pk/issues/octdec05/pdf/wandering_spleen.pdf| accessdate=2007-02-25 ] as well aswomen between the ages of 20 and 40.cite web | coauthors= Safioleas MC, Stamatakos MC, Diab AI, Safioleas PM | title=Wandering spleen with torsion of the pedicle | publisher=Saudi Med J.| date=January 28, 2007 | url=http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=pubmed&cmd=Retrieve&dopt=AbstractPlus&list_uids=17206307&query_hl=3&itool=pubmed_docsum| accessdate=2007-02-25 ] Even so, the disease is very rare and fewer than 500 occurrences of the disease have been reported as of2005 ,cite web | first=Malak | last=Hasan Alawi | coauthors=Ahmad Khalifa, Sami Hassan Bana | title=Wandering Spleen: A Challenging Diagnosis | format = PDF | publisher=Open Publishing | date=October-December 2005 | work=Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences | url=http://www.pjms.com.pk/issues/octdec05/pdf/wandering_spleen.pdf| accessdate=2007-02-25 ] of which around 148 (including both children and adult cases) were documented to have been from between 1960 and 1992.cite web | coauthors=T. ligament scite web | title=Wandering Spleen | publisher=NORD | url=http://www.rarediseases.org/search/rdbdetail_abstract.html?disname=Wandering%20Spleen| accessdate=2007-02-25 ] that help to keep the spleen located in the upper left part of theabdomen . Though not a genetic disease, wandering spleen is often found at birth. It can occur inadult s as the result of injuries and other similar conditions that cause the ligaments to weaken, such asconnective tissue disease orpregnancy .cite web | title=Wandering Spleen | publisher=NORD | url=http://www.rarediseases.org/search/rdbdetail_abstract.html?disname=Wandering%20Spleen| accessdate=2007-02-25 ]ymptoms
Symptoms include an enlargement in the size of the spleen, cite web | title=Wandering Spleen | publisher=NORD | url=http://www.rarediseases.org/search/rdbdetail_abstract.html?disname=Wandering%20Spleen| accessdate=2007-02-25 ] or a change from the spleen's original position to another location, usually in either other parts of the
abdomen or into the pelvis. This ability to move to other locations is commonly attributed to the spleen's pedicle being abnormally long.cite web | first=Malak | last=Hasan Alawi | coauthors=Ahmad Khalifa, Sami Hassan Bana | title=Wandering Spleen: A Challenging Diagnosis | format = PDF | publisher=Open Publishing | date=October-December 2005 | work=Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences | url=http://www.pjms.com.pk/issues/octdec05/pdf/wandering_spleen.pdf| accessdate=2007-02-25 ]Physical factors may cause
ischuria ,constipation , as well as numerous spleen-related diseases such ashypersplenism ,thrombocytopenia , andlymphoma .cite web | coauthors=T. Satyadas, N. Nasir and H.A. Bradpiece | title=Wandering spleen: case report and literature review | publisher=University Department of Surgery, Royal Free Hospital and University Medical School, London, U.K. | date=April 27, 2002 | url=http://www.rcsed.ac.uk/journal/vol47_2/4720012.html| accessdate=2007-03-02 ] Blocking of the arteries andtorsion in the spleen can also result in abdominal pain or swelling.cite web |url=http://www.medcyclopaedia.com/library/topics/volume_vii/w/wandering_spleen.aspx |title= Wandering spleen |accessdate=2007-02-26 |format= |work= ] However, lack of visiblesymptom s — except in incidents of abdominal pain — makes the disease difficult for doctors to diagnose, cite web | coauthors= Safioleas MC, Stamatakos MC, Diab AI, Safioleas PM | title=Wandering spleen with torsion of the pedicle | publisher=Saudi Med J.| date=January 28, 2007 | url=http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=pubmed&cmd=Retrieve&dopt=AbstractPlus&list_uids=17206307&query_hl=3&itool=pubmed_docsum| accessdate=2007-02-25 ] thoughmedical imaging techniques such asmedical ultrasonography ,magnetic resonance imaging , orcomputed tomography can be used to confirm its occurrence.Treatment
The disorder must be treated through
laparoscopic surgery , due to the possibility of blocked arteries in the spleen. The usual treatment issplenopexy ,fixation of the spleen, but if there is no blood flow after unwinding the spleen throughdetorsion thensplenectomy must be performed.cite web | first=MC | last=Safioleas | coauthors= Stamatakos MC, Diab AI, Safioleas PM | title=Wandering spleen with torsion of the pedicle | publisher=Saudi Med J.| date=January 28, 2007 | url=http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=pubmed&cmd=Retrieve&dopt=AbstractPlus&list_uids=17206307&query_hl=3&itool=pubmed_docsum| accessdate=2007-02-25 ] Although there have been few reported cases of treatment through laparoscopic surgery due to the rarity of the disease, it has been proven to be an effective surgical technique.cite web | coauthors= Castellon-Pavon CJ, Valderrabano-Gonzalez S, Anchustegui-Melgarejo P, Alvarez-Alvarez J, Morales-Artero S, Perez-Algar C, Corrales-Castillo, Garcia-Serrano FR | title=Laparoscopic splenectomy due to torsion of a wandering spleen | publisher= Cir Esp.| date=December, 2006 | url=http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=pubmed&cmd=Retrieve&dopt=AbstractPlus&list_uids=17192227&query_hl=3&itool=pubmed_docsum| accessdate=2007-02-25 ]Notes and references
