In his book "Origins of the Fourth World War" Nyquist promotes the notion that war is normal to history and Americans have come to think that peace and prosperity are somehow guaranteed by mutual assured destruction. Nyquist refers to ideas put forward by the controversial Soviet KGB defector Anatoliy Golitsyn who published his predictions about a future liberalization of the Communist Bloc in a 1984 book titled "New Lies for Old."According to Nyquist, the social psychology of the United States and the social psychology of the Russian ruling class are at odds. The Americans do not realize the danger from Russia's ruling circles, while the Russian ruling circles only see the apparent obliviousness and weakness of the West's hedonistic market system.
