Lynnhaven Mall is a two-level, enclosed, super-regional shopping mall in Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA. It opened in August 1981 and is the largest mall in the Hampton Roads [ [http://ns1.vgnet.com/vb/shopping.php Visitor's Guide Network] ] metropolitan area of southeastern Virginia. It is also one the largest malls on the East Coast [http://www3.oag.com/Cities/Detail?city=368290&cat=28&item=40532162 OAG Travel Information] ] , comprising 1.35 million square feet (125,000 m²) [ [http://www.yesvirginiabeach.com/vgn.aspx?vgnextchannel=4279766b3b950110VgnVCM100000f30a0a0aRCRD&vgnextparchannel=6c28766b3b950110VgnVCM100000f30a0a0aRCRD Official Virginia Beach Economic Development Resource Center page] ] of retailing space and over 180 merchants, featuring prominent anchor tenants Dillard's, JCPenney, and Macy's. Some of the center's larger tenants include Barnes & Noble, Dick's Sporting Goods, XXI Forever "(opening November 2008)", H&M, Old Navy, and Steve & Barry's. The mall also features a full-sized carousel and children's play area inside the glass-enclosed main entrance, as well as a 650-seat Food Court comprising 17 eateries surrounding a vaulted two-story atrium. A recently completed 18 screen AMC Theatres complex anchors an open-air pedestrian plaza called "The Inlet".

From its opening in 1981, the mall was owned and managed by Simon Property Group. Simon sold the mall to the New York Teachers Retirement System in 1990, but Simon was retained as manager. In August 2003, Lynnhaven Mall was sold for $256.6 million USD to General Growth Properties, which owns and manages the mall today. Anchor tenants

Lynnhaven Mall has seen several changes in its anchor tenants over time.

Current anchors

*Dillard's (200,000 sq ft.)
*JCPenney (150,434 sq ft.)
*Macy's (199,863 sq ft.)
*AMC Theatres (75,044 sq ft.) - 18 screens

Previous anchors

*Rices-Nachmans was converted to Hess's in 1985 with the former's acquisition.
*Hess's closed in 1991 as part of the company's collapse and the space was taken by The Limited, which installed several stores in the anchor: The Limited, The Limited Too, Express and Structure. H&M took over much of the space in 2005, with most of The Limited moving to another location (The Limited Too remained at its present location until relocating in 2008). Outside access was closed when H&M moved in.
*Hecht's entered the mall through the acquisition of two of the mall's original tenants: First Miller & Rhoads in 1990, then Thalhimer's in 1992. Until 1998, Hecht's operated both anchors, delegating the south anchor (formerly Miller & Rhoads) to women and the north anchor (formerly Thalhimer's) to men. In 1998, Hecht's decided to build one large anchor across from the north anchor to take the place of the two smaller ones. Hecht's vacated both anchors when the new one opened. Hecht's became Macy's in 2006 as part of a nationwide rebranding.
*Miller & Rhoads was acquired by Hecht's in 1990. The former Miller & Rhoads location was closed in 1998 with the opening of the new combined Hecht's anchor. Eventually, Dillard's moved into the vacated anchor as its former location was demolished.
*Thalhimer's was converted to Hecht's in 1992, with the mall temporarily including two Hecht's stores (along with the former Miller & Rhoads). This location closed in 1998 with the opening of the new combined Hecht's anchor.
*Montgomery Ward closed in 2001 as part of the company's collapse, and the large space is now partitioned into Barnes & Noble, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Steve & Barry's.
*Leggett was converted to Belk, and subsequently to Dillard's as part of a multi-store trade. This store was demolished in 2005 to create an outdoor plaza called "The Inlet" that houses a new AMC Theatres complex and two restaurants, while Dillard's moved to one of the former Hecht's locations.
*Lord & Taylor opened in 1999 in the vacated Thalhimer's/Hecht's north anchor. Lord & Taylor closed in 2005 due to downsizing and the anchor spot is currently vacant.
*Freedom Electronics became DSW Shoe Warehouse, whose space was vacated in 2007 when DSW moved to an outlying shopping center. Freedom Electronics featured a mall entrance, while DSW did not. A larger XXI Forever store, with an entrance into the main mall, is slated to occupy the area in Fall 2008.
