29 April ,1885 –November 25 ,1971 ) was a Scottish poet and writer on botanical subjects, and aPresbyterian minister who later became anAnglican clergyman . He was born in Elgin, and educated inEdinburgh , where he went to school, thenEdinburgh University and New College for theological training. He was ordained in theUnited Free Church of Scotland in 1912.Later, in 1920, he moved to
Hove inSussex . He joined theChurch of England and became aparish priest asvicar ofStonegate , also in Sussex. He was made a canon ofChichester Cathedral . He retired in 1959.His status as a poet was recognised quite late, in the 1950s.
