On the Democratic side, Indianapolis businessman
Jim Schellinger and former U.S. Rep. Jill Long Thompson had announced their candidacies. Indiana Senate Minority Leader Richard Young also ran early, but he dropped out of the race well before the primary. Schellinger, with support of key Democratic officials such as former Indiana House Speaker John Gregg, former Indianapolis MayorBart Peterson and the late U.S. Rep.Julia Carson [cite web| url = http://www.jimschellinger.com/2007/07/endorsements_1.php | title = Schellinger for Governor: Endorsements | accessdate = 2008-04-26 | date = ongoing | publisher = JimSchellinger.com] , had raised over $1 million in campaign funds. Governor of Indiana ,Mitch Daniels , defeated the incumbent Democratic governorJoseph Kernan in 2004, becoming the first Republican governor in Indiana in 16 years. OnJune 16 ,2007 , Daniels announced he was running for re-election with his Lieutenant GovernorBecky Skillman . Daniels will compete against Jill Long Thompson in the general election in November. If Daniels wins re-election, he will remain Indiana's 49th Governor.Libertarian race
Andy Horning , engineer, Libertarian Party activist and frequent candidate, ran unopposed for his party's nomination. He will appear on the November ballot with Lisa Kelly for Lt. Governor.Polling
Polling had shown that largely Mitch Daniels had repeatedly led slightly against both Jill Long Thompson and Jim Schellinger. Long Thompson, the Democratic Party of Indiana's gubernatorial candidate, recently has slipped further behind Daniels in most proposed polls.
