Governor General Loudon (ship)

Governor General Loudon (ship)

The Governor General Loudon was a mail steamer and excursion vessel captained by Johan Lindemann and operated by the Netherlands Indies Steamship Company [http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/krakatoa/diaries/lindeman.html Captain Lindemann's Diary] on the Discovery Channel website for (accessed February 23, 2007).]

In 1883, the ship was present at the eruption of Krakatoa and survived the subsequent tsunami when the captain steered the ship head on into the wave. [http://www.geology.sdsu.edu/how_volcanoes_work/Krakatau.html Krakatau, Indonesia (1883)] (accessed February 23, 2007).] After the wave passed, pyroclastic airfall was the ships biggest enemy. Enough of it could've made the ship capsize, but again, the people onboard survived because they scooped out the volcanic ashes.
