Te Aroha Centre

Te Aroha Centre

"Te Aroha Centre" is a community centre based in Te Aroha, New Zealand. The centre includes a fully equipped Theatre, with rooms for crafts, seminars, meetings and an art gallery. The centre also hosts dance classes, children's acting classes and regular activities for the community.

History

The Te Aroha Centre is built inside the former Bendon Lingerie factory which housed 100 people sewing. Bendon agreed to sell the premises to Future Te Aroha, a charitable trust, for NZD$67,500. After much fund-raising and assistance from a bevy of institutions in and around Te Aroha, the sale was finalized.

The Centre was officially opened by Judith Tizard on November 23rd 2001, starting off a month-long Aroha (Maori for love or esteem) festival which celebrated with a theme of "who we are". The theme for the building is "Aroha for ourselves, our family and our community". Te Aroha Centre tries to depict this through as many media as possible through the telling of stories.
