Buena High School is a comprehensive public high school in Ventura, California. It is part of the Ventura Unified School District and serves most of the eastern portion of Ventura. The western portion of Ventura is served by rival school Ventura High School, and in between them is Foothill Technology High School, which is considered a "magnet school" and has an enrollment of 938 students. Buena High School has an enrollment of 2,312 students, while Ventura High School has an enrollment of 2,123 students. Buena High's most famous student was Kevin Costner. Another famous student is Freddie Keiaho who is a linebacker for NFL's Indianapolis Colts.
Drama Department
Productions
The drama department at Buena attracts a great number of its students; previous productions include "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (2004), "The Breakfast Club" (2005), "Moulin Rouge!" (2007), "To Kill A Mockingbird" (2007) and "Little Shop of Horrors" (2008). The 2008/2009 season includes "Much Ado About Nothing" and "Beauty and the Beast" as well as student directed One Acts, a Musical Revue, an annual Short Film Festival, and the annual "Comedy Shop".
Classes
*Drama 1-an introduction to acting.
*Drama 2-an advanced course designed to improve and sharpen acting skills.
*Stagecraft- a shop class that focuses on buliding/painting sets, designing costumes/props, designing makeup, and lighting for the shows.
BARK Zone
BARK is a peer-tutoring course in which students with a GPA below 2.0 are required to attend. The goal is to help students enjoy school more and give them the oppurtunity in which they need to succed. An hour-long lunch is granted to students not in BARK; BARK Zone is held in the first thirty minutes of lunch, the preceeding thirty minutes is the designated lunch time for all students. Students enrolled can get out of the class at the end of each quarter if they have brought their GPA above a 2.0 . The course started in 2006.
