- Adam de Tyninghame
Adam de Tyninghame was a 14th century cleric and, as his name suggests, a probable native of
Tyninghame inEast Lothian . Adam appears in the records asrector ofFalkirk (underHolyrood Abbey ) from 1344, and by 1360 he was thesecretary ofWilliam Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas .Dowden, "Bishops of Scotland", p. 117.] In 1378, he was sent as one of four ambassadors sent toFrance for the Scottish king. He was Dean of thediocese of Aberdeen - briefly dean of Dunblane in 1361 [Watt, "Fasti Ecclesiae", p. 81.] - from 1362 until 1380, [Watt, "Fasti Ecclesiae", p. 81.] the year in which he was elected asBishop of Aberdeen . [Dowden, "Bishops of Scotland", pp. 116-7; Watt, "Fasti Ecclesiae", p. 4.]In 1382 Bishop Adam was engaged in a struggle with the
husbandmen of "Fermartyne" (Formartine ), who had not paid their secondtithe s, and Adam had to get an order from the Lieutenant of Scotland, John,Earl of Carrick , to enforce payment. Adam, however, did not enjoy a good relationship withAlexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan , who was the main warlord of the north and brother of Carrick. [Keith, "Historical Catalogue", p. 112.] He continued his close relationship with the Douglases, his first patrons, and at different points in the 1380s can be found wintessing documents byMargaret, Countess of Mar , window of the first Earl of Douglas and mother to the second.
