The Greenphone was a smartphone developed by Trolltech that uses Qtopia Phone Edition, UI and application platform embedded in Linux comprising mostly free and open source software.

The proprietary software on the phone includes the communications stack and the package manager. [cite web | url=http://linuxdevices.com/news/NS4872069549.html | title=Linux Devices article on the Greenphone|quote=Yrvin noted that Greenphone does contain some proprietary components, including its secure execution environment (SXE) package manager and its communications stack.] However, Trolltech has put these components under GPL for the next version of Qtopia, 4.3, snapshots of which are already freely [http://trolltech.com/developer/downloads/qtopia/qpe-ostp available] . Thus, it is now possible to run the Greenphone without any proprietary components by updating its software to Qtopia 4.3.

On October 22, 2007, Trolltech announced that it has sold all its inventory of Greenphones and will no longer continue production, having achieved the goal of promoting the Qtopia platform and gaining interest from developers. Focus will instead be shifted to development on the Neo FreeRunner phone. Trolltech intends to continue supporting the Qtopia Greenphone community [cite web|url=http://trolltech.com/company/newsroom/announcements/press.2007-10-21.0880321862 | title=Trolltech Press Release on the end of Greenphone produtions] , and alternative hardware, such as the Neo 1973.
