It is a village near Udgir,which is famous for high breed cows it has gained its name from the time of the Nizam, where the cows are sell and bought at a place known as bail bazaar or "goow Bazar" in Marathi. This "bazaar" was owned by a Rohilla Sadozai Pathan Akbar Muhammad Khān Durrānī دراني Ahmad Shah Durrani from ابدالي Abdali lineage from the Popalzai from Tareen and from Pashto tribe, the next brother of Alam Muhammad Khān Durrānī-who was a Bureaucrat in the Nizam kingdom called as Deccan, Deoni was in majority ruled by his clan in the time of Nizam VII Meer Osman Ali Khān Siddique of Suharwad from Kurdistan.
Deoni previously was in the princely state of Nizam of Hyderabad, saw a series of massacre which was carried out by communal forces which came there from Solapur to Udgir and finally to Deoni. After the partition of India,which took place in 1947, and uniting of the Nizam territory in Indian Union territory in 1948 after the completion of Operation Polo (Nizam state was having 17 polo grounds largest in India, hence the operation was named after it) by the Indian army led by Sarda valabh patel on 18 September 1948, large scale massacre was held in the former Nizam territory except the capital of the princely state Hyderabad.
In Deoni hundreds of people were killed most of them were from Udgir - a city which is 20 km from the north of Deoni. Among 565 states which was acceded in the Union territory of India this is also one of them. Communal forces on 15 September 1948 armed with weapons supplied by the Indian army was continued to fight for more than one week and seeing to be losing at the hands from the people of Deoni the fight was withheld.
The Dominant Ruler who were having strong ties with the religious force in Deccan led by Qasim Rizvi and pathans was asked to Surrender their weapons by the army,all the people consisting of women and children took refuge were in the boundaries of "Bada ghar" but on 22 September 1948 the army attacked at night causing a massacre and capturing it.There is a river in Deoni where the banks of it was filled with the dead bodies most of them were Muslims.Most of this sort of massacre which was carried out in small and big places after the annexation of Deccan in Indian union territory was least known to the press because of no or little reports and the government suppression of this kind of news.
The most splendid Architecture in Deoni was the Palace of Gulab Muhammad Khān Durrānī ruler who built it at the side of river and water of river used to come in "angan" of the Rangeen Mahal it was named as "Bada Ghar" due to its massive size which is spread along more than 14 acres (57,000 m2) of land studded with Rainbow glasses and gold coating walls of Deewan, golden engravings of Persian culture which was looted at that time. It has doors which measured up to 30 feet (9.1 m). The remains of it can still be seen there and during the massacre most of the people took refuge in it.
Along with many other people who lost their lives are the Rohilla Sadozai Pathan family lost nearly 14 members among them were Iqbal Muhammad khan Durrānī son of Akbar Muhammad khan Durrānī, AlamKhān Durrānī, GulabKhān, ZamanKhān, most of them were gathered after their death and burned along with other people.
