*World Series champion (1969)Gary Edward Gentry (born
October 6 ,1946 inPhoenix, Arizona ), is a former right-handedpitcher inMajor League Baseball , who played seven seasons for theNew York Mets andAtlanta Braves between 1969 and 1975.Gentry went to
Arizona State University and began his professional baseball career at age 23 in 1969. As a rookie, he won 13 games, pitching in a rotation withTom Seaver andJerry Koosman . He won a World Series with the Mets that year, as the Mets defeated theBaltimore Orioles . ThatSeptember 24 , he pitched a four-hit, 6-0 shutout in the game that clinched theNational League East title (both leagues had been split into two divisions for the start of this season, after expanding from 10 teams to 12) for the Mets, who had trailed theChicago Cubs by 9 1/2 games onAugust 13 . Gentry was also the winning pitcher in Game 3 of the World Series itself, a game highlighted byTommie Agee 's two spectacular catches that prevented six Oriole runs. On a historical note,Nolan Ryan relieved Gentry in that game and pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the save. It would be the only World Series appearance of Ryan's 27-year career. Ryan also came on in relief for Gentry in Game 3 of the League Championship Series against the Braves after Gentry ran into trouble in the third inning.Gentry's November 1972 trade to Atlanta was followed by a ruinous elbow injury. He played his last game for the Braves on
May 6 , 1975 and was re-signed by the Mets, but was released onJune 19 . During his 7-year career, his pitching record was 46 wins and 49 losses.External links
