Brian Smith (born July 16, 1959 in Ames, Iowa) is an American Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer best known for his celebrity portrait photography.

Early Life and Education

Born in Ames, Iowa, he got his start in photography while a high school swimmer photographing swimming and other sports as a stringer for the Ames Daily Tribune. As a 20-year-old journalism student at the University of Missouri [ [http://journalism.missouri.edu/alumni/brian-smith-81.html] Missouri Journalism Alumni] in Columbia, Missouri his first magazine photograph was published in LIFE Magazine showing New York Yankees' manager Billy Martin crying at Thurman Munson’s funeral.

Recognition and Awards

Brian Smith won the Pulitzer Prize for his photographs of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games while a photographer for the "Orange County Register". In 1988, he was again a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his photographs of Haiti in Turmoil for the "Miami Herald". His photograph of Greg Louganis hitting his head on the diving board at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games won top awards from World Press Photo, the Pictures of the Year and was selected by Photo District News as one of the "Greatest Sports Photos 1980-2000" [ [http://www.pdngallery.com/20years/sports/20_brian_smith.html] Photo District News 20th Anniversary Issue] . Smith was twice named as one of American Photo magazine's "New Faces in Photography".

Career

Brian Smith's portraits of celebrities, athletes and business executives have appeared on the covers of magazines including his photograph of Pope John Paul II which was featured on the cover of "Newsweek" in 2005. Teaching and Public Speaking

Smith has taught and lectured on Magazine Celebrity Photography at Trade Shows including PhotoPlus Expo in New York and WPPI in Las Vegas. Personal

He lives in Miami Beach, Florida, United States with his wife, fashion stylist Fazia Ali. He is the son of Iowa State University Industrial Engineering professor-emeritus Gerald W.
