Friends Jeff Schartoff and Scott Ellis, while on the way to
Lollapalooza , decided to start a band. They then drafted Aimee Echo as vocalist after asking if she could scream. John Monte joined as guitarist but did not last long and they went through a string of guitarists before finding Mike Tempesta. The group began opening for large name bands such as Sublime, Helmet,Deftones , andKorn and struck a deal with Hollywood Records. The band also toured the UK with Tura Satana and Coal Chamber respectively in 1997 before playing the UK Ozzfest in June 1998. Their last show was at theHouse of Blues in Los Angeles on July 8, 1998.On Aimee Echo's birthday (March 27th, 2008) after theSTART played their last residency day at Crash Mansion in Los Angeles, the former members of Human Waste Project came on stage and played two songs ("Dog" and "Shine") with Aimee Echo. It is not clear if this is a one time situation or a reforming of the band. Also in attendance were former members of Snot,
Sevendust , Craig Riker ofDeadsy , producerRoss Robinson and Chibi ofThe Birthday Massacre .As of July 1, 2008 Aimee Echo has confirmed the members are now in rehearsal for an upcoming reunion tour.
Human Waste Project will have a reunion show at the Key Club in Hollywood on October 10, 2008.
