Pictures of the Year (POY) is an annual international
photojournalism contest, administered by theMissouri School of Journalism .Previously known as the "Annual Fifty-Print Exhibition" and "News Pictures of the Year Competition and Exhibition", POY was founded in 1944 at the
University of Missouri by photojournalism professorClifton C. Edom and his wife Vi, with a published compilation and traveling exhibit of winning photographs. In 1957, the competition merged with one hosted by theNational Press Photographers Association .
