Pictures of the Year

Pictures of the Year (POY) is an annual international photojournalism contest, administered by the Missouri School of Journalism.

Previously known as the "Annual Fifty-Print Exhibition" and "News Pictures of the Year Competition and Exhibition", POY was founded in 1944 at the University of Missouri by photojournalism professor Clifton C. Edom and his wife Vi, with a published compilation and traveling exhibit of winning photographs. OCLC|3916229] The following year, the Edoms also established the College Photographer of the Year, which eventually became its own contest. In 1957, the competition merged with one hosted by the National Press Photographers Association. Succeeding directors, such as Angus McDougall and Bill Kuykendall, have guided the contest; and in 2001, the Pictures of the Year became international and known as POYi.
