Cattawood Springs

Cattawood Springs

Cattawood Springs is a place in Portland Parish, Jamaica located at latitude 18 04' 00", longitude 76 26' 00".

Originally this was a Maroon settlement. This name probably derives from the Twi word "katá" which means to cover conceal or protect [ [http://books.google.com/books?id=_lmFzFgsTZYC&pg=RA1-PA124&lpg=RA1-PA124&dq=cottawood&source=web&ots=N5NrwgVvo8&sig=wykCGjHk13kQ84yM2apsaQ4r0cE"A Dictionary of Jamaican English"] edited by F.G. The original inhabitants left Cattawood in 1730 to join up with Cudjoe in Clarendon Parish. Firstly a group of hundred men women and children went to join Cudjoe, and then the rest of community followed suit in small groups. They retained their name subsequently settling in Cotterwood in Saint Elizabeth Parish.
