Russia andCentral Asia . It grows in the wild on grassy steppes at an elevation of 1700 to 2000 meters, in sunny or semi-shaded locations. It is a member of thesubgenus iris, meaning that it is a bearded iris, and grows from arhizome .It grows to a stem height of 40 to 50 centimeters. The leaves are bluish-green in color, and sword-shaped, 40 to 50 centimeters in length, and 2.5 to 3 centimeters in width.
Theinflorescence , produced in May, is fan-shaped and contains two or three flowers.
