Cecil Higgins Gallery

Cecil Higgins Gallery

Cecil Higgins Gallery is the principle art gallery in Bedford, Bedfordshire, England. The gallery is housed in an extended Victorian mansion (built in 1846 [ [http://www.galaxy.bedfordshire.gov.uk/webingres/bedfordshire/vlib/0.digitised_resources/bedford_digitisation_timeline_modern.htm Bedford Timeline: Modern - Digitised Resources - Bedfordshire's Virtual Library ] ] ) in the same complex as Bedford Museum.

The gallery holds collections of watercolours, prints, ceramics and furniture. Of particular note is the group of furniture by the Victorian art-architect William Burges.

Two historic buildings in the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery and Bedford Museum complex are being refurbished thanks to a £2.5 million award by the Department for Communities and Local Government. This means that the gallery is currently closed. The work is due to be completed in 2009. [http://www.cecilhigginsartgallery.org/ 'Notice']

The newly refurbished gallery will be at the heart of the new 'Cultural Quarter' on Castle Lane in Bedford. Additional spaces for exhibitions, events and corporate hospitality will be created and storage conditions for the gallery's collections will be improved. The new gallery space will enable Bedford to host touring exhibitions from national galleries as well as major family blockbuster exhibitions like "Dinosaur", "Batman" and "Doctor Who".
