mining village, with shafts dug out underneath the River Dee. The slag heaps from these mining operations were open to the public and locally known as 'The Black Hills'. In the last few years however they have been fenced off to allow sheep to graze. The marshes of the River Dee are popular with bird watchers and
horticulturalists because of the wide range of flora and fauna to be found in the area.Lord Nelson's mistress,
Emma Hamilton , was born in nearby Ness [citeweb|url=http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/about/news/newsarticle.asp?id=447&venue=7|title=Nelson and Lady Hamilton|work=National Museums Liverpool|date=15 February 2005|accessdate=21 October|accessyear=2007] [citeweb|url=http://www.icons.org.uk/theicons/collection/hms-victory/features/nelson-and-emma-letters-in-progress|title=The Story of Nelson and Emma|work=Icons: A Portrait of England|accessdate=21 October|accessyear=2007] and is remembered locally with the Lady Hamiltonpub .References
