Iranian constitutional referendum, 1963

The Iranian constitutional referendum of 1963 was held in January 1963.

Aims

The referendum was for the reforms of the White Revolution of 1963 [ [http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/friedman200505160834.asp The People’s Movement] May 16, 2005] . It was overwhelmingly approved by voters and abolished the feudal landlord-peasant system which angered the country's Islamic clergy [ [http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,923854,00.html The Mystic Who Lit The Fires of Hatred] , "Time", 7 January 1980] . Additionally, it brought about compulsory education at the primary level and privatization of many factories [ [http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/world/countries/iran.html?nav=el washingtonpost.com ] ] .

uffrage for women

The 1963 referendum also bestowed upon women the right to vote [http://www.undp.org.ir/reports/hdr/e-NHDR.pdf] , a right previously denied to them under the Iranian Constitution of 1906 pursuant to Chapter 2, Article 3.
