Everardo Elizondo

Everardo Elizondo Almaguer is a noted Mexican economist who has worked for private, public and academic institutions.

He was born in Linares, Nuevo León. After earning a bachelor's degree with honors in economics from the [http://www.uanl.mx/ Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon] , he studied a master's degree and a PhD, both in economics, at the [http://www.wisc.edu/ University of Wisconsin-Madison] in the United States. He earned a diploma in taxation at [http://www.harvard.edu/ Harvard University] .

His professional career started in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon in the department of economic studies of a private financial institution, "Compañía General de Aceptaciones", which later became Grupo Financiero Serfin (now [http://www.santander.com.mx/index.htm Banco Santander] ). From there he moved to [http://www.alfalan.es/english/paginas/alfa_hogar/alfa_hogar.html, "Grupo Alfa"] , a leader of the Mexican private industry in the seventies, where he served as General Director for Economic Studies for eight years. Afterwards he created and led during nine years a private consultancy: "Index, Economía Aplicada". He also briefly collaborated as a consultant with the [http://www.nl.gob.mx/ Nuevo Leon State Government] during the Sócrates Rizzo's administration. In 1992 he joined Grupo Financiero Bancomer (now [http://www.bancomer.com.mx/ BBVA-Bancomer] ) as Director of Economic Research.

In 1998 president Ernesto Zedillo invited him to become member of the board of governors of the [http://www.banxico.org.mx Bank of Mexico] , to take the position left by Francisco Gil Díaz as deputy governor. In 2000 the Senate of the Republic approved the president Vicente Fox Quesada's nomination for Everardo Elizondo to undertake a full period, which ends on December 2008.

Everardo Elizondo was also founder and head of the Graduate School of Economics at the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon, which later became the Postgraduate Studies Division in Economics. He has lectured several courses in that University's [http://www.economia.uanl.mx/ Department of Economics] , and also in the School of Economics and in the Graduate School at the Monterrey Institute of Technology [http://www.itesm.edu (ITESM)] . From 1982 to 1983 he visited the Institute for Latin American Studies at the [http://www.utexas.edu/ University of Texas (Austin)] as a research fellow.

A renowned economics and finance columnist for more than 25 year, he writes a biweekly column at [http://www.elnorte.com El Norte] and [http://www.reforma.com Reforma] , and makes eventual contributions to [http://www.economista.com.mx/ El Economista] , academic books and periodicals. He has been member of the board of directors of several Mexican institutions like the Universidad Mexicana del Noreste, Grupo Senda, Farmacias Benavides and Grupo Financiero Banorte. Frequently he gives conferences in Mexico and abroad."'
