Ansells was a brewery located in the
Aston area ofBirmingham ,England .The brewery was founded by Joseph Ansell in 1858 at Aston Cross on the site of several
artesian well s, at coord|52.500|-1.8820|region:GB_type:landmark|display=inline,title (the laterHP Sauce factory was adjacent). Ansells became a limited company in 1901 and grew by acquiring several other smaller local brewers including Rushtons (1923), Lucas of Leamington (1928) and Holt's Brewery (1934). Holt's logo, aRed Squirrel seen in side profile, was subsequently adopted by Ansells to identify its own beers.In 1961, Ansells merged with
Tetley Walker andInd Coope to formAllied Breweries . The Aston Brewery stopped all production following an industrial dispute in 1981. The site is now a car showroom. Production was subsequently moved to Allied'sBurton upon Trent brewery, and some former staff set up theAston Manor Brewery .References
