- Sting operation
In law enforcement, a sting operation is a
deceptive operation designed to catch a person committing a crime. A typical sting will have a law-enforcement officer or cooperative member of the public play a role as criminal partner or potential victim and go along with a suspect's actions to gather evidence of the suspect's wrongdoing.Examples
* Deploying a
bait car (also called ahoney trap ) to catch an auto thief
* Setting up a seemingly vulnerable honeypot computer to lure and gain information about crackers.
* Police arranging someone under thelegal drinking age to ask an adult to buyalcoholic beverage for him or her [ [http://www.kesq.com/Global/story.asp?S=1878103&nav=9qrxNETb KESQ.com Palm Springs, Coachella Valley - Weather, News, Sports: SPECIAL REPORT: Local police crack down on adults buying booze for minors ] ] , or similar for cigarettes
* Posing as someone who is seekingillegal drugs orchild pornography to catch a supplier
* Posing as a supplier of child pornography to catch a buyer/downloader
* Posing as a child in achat room to lure a child molester
* An undercover officer posing as a potential customer to bust a prostitute (in the case that he/she does it illegally).
* An undercover officer posing as a prostitute to bust a potential "customer" (in the case that being a customer of a prostitute is illegal).Ethical and legal concerns
Sting operations are fraught with ethical concerns over whether they constitute
entrapment . Law-enforcement may have to be careful not to "provoke" the commission of a crime by someone who would not normally be inclined to do so. Additionally, in the process of such operations, the police often engage in the same so-calledcrimes , often victimless, such as buying or selling contraband, soliciting prostitutes, etc. Incommon law jurisdictions, the defendant may invoke the defense ofentrapment .For example, in the case of a drug sting if the police put pressure upon a person to sell drugs who initially refuses but is persuaded to do so then they could be seen as entrapping. However should the police indicate they wish to purchase drugs and a person offers to sell them, then there is no entrapment. A good example of such concerns involving entrapment is
To Catch a Predator , a reality tv show hosted byChris Hansen . The show involves outsiders having online conversations with decoys posing as underaged females. The whole show centers around people having the intent to commit sexual acts with children.ting operations in popular culture
