Heitkamp Ingenieur- und Kraftwerksbau GmbH is a construction company and an international service provider in the construction sector headquartered in Herne, Germany.

History

The Heitkamp Ingenieur- und Kraftwerksbau GmbH is a 100% subsidiary of the Heitkamp BauHolding GmbH group of companies. The construction company can look back to a tradition of more than 116 years. The company was founded 1892 as the Tiefbaufirma E. Heitkamp. In 1902, the son of Heinrich Heitkamp took over the "Tiefbaufirma E. Heitkamp". In 1946 "E. Heitkamp Tiefbaugeschäft in Wanne-Eickel" changed its corporate name to "Bauunternehmung E. Heitkamp GmbH". Heinrich Heitkamp senior and his sons Heinrich and Robert became partners. In the period of 1950 – 1960 the company became involved in special mining engineering, power plant and tunnel construction. In 1964 Robert Heitkamp took over the corporate management and expanded the family business to become one of the ten biggest construction companies in Germany. In 1981 Robert Heitkamp retired from the business. Under the chairmanship of his son, Prof. Dr. Dr. Engelbert Heitkamp, the management was reorganized. In 1995, Heitkamp was awarded its biggest single contract for all the structural work including two natural draught cooling towers at the new construction site of the Lippendorf power plant . In 1998 it was awarded the contract to build the highest natural draught cooling tower in the world in Niederaußem (height of 200 m). In 1999 the construction company "E. Heitkamp GmbH" in Herne merged with the "Deilmann-Haniel GmbH" in Dortmund to become "Heitkamp-Deilmann-Haniel GmbH" based in Herne. During the course of 2005 the civil engineering competencies were fused to become the Heitkamp Ingenieur- und Kraftwerksbau GmbH. In 2008 "Heitkamp-Deilmann-Haniel GmbH" changed its name to "Heitkamp BauHolding GmbH" after the domestic mining activities had been dropped.

The core competencies of the company include the following:
* Power plant construction - The main focus of the company is the construction of power plants. In Germany alone, more than 100 power plants have been built by Heitkamp. Their types range from district heating and cogeneration plants to joint venture power plants and engine cogeneration plants to Denox plants and steam turbine power plants. Favored by government policy, biomass power plant construction has increasingly become part of the services in recent years.
* Nuclear power plant construction - Heitkamp has played an important part in the construction of almost all nuclear power plants in Germany that included, for example, the nuclear power plants in Phillippsburg and Emsland. Internationally, Heitkamp has been active in the construction of the new Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant in Finland. The company is building the main building of the power plant (turbine house) as well as the pump house.
* Cooling tower construction - Heitkamp has a very strong presence in the construction of cooling towers in Germany. Internationally, the company has been active in Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Turkey, South Africa, India, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. At home and abroad, more than 90 cooling towers have been built.
* Industrial construction - In the sector of industrial construction, the projects included well-known buildings such as the Toyota Formula 1 site in Cologne and the ICE halls in Dortmund. The construction of new production lines for the production of solar cells become increasingly more important.
* Civil engineering - Heitkamp’s activities in this sector include the construction of locks, treatment plants, tunnels, bridges and the reconditioning of train stations such as, for example, the reconditioning of the Dresden Central Station and the new train station in Erfurt.
* International construction activities - Internationally, Heitkamp is active in the construction of embassies, banks, treatment plants and industrial production facilities.
