Bosnian Americans are citizens of the United States who ancestry can be traced to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The vast majority of Bosnian Americans emigrated to the United States during and after the war in Bosnia (1992-1995), though small numbers of Bosnians emigrated as early as the 19th century. It is worth noting that those of Serb and Croat ethnicity mostly choose to self identify as Serbian Americans or Croatian Americans, (e.g. the actor Karl Malden's father was a Serb from Bileća, so Malden identifies as a Serb) though their ancestors are from Bosnia and Herzegovina. As a result the the number of Bosnian Americans may actually be much higher than reported by the census.
