Hatteras Inlet is a
estuary located in theOuter Banks , NC that separatesHatteras Island , NC andOcracoke Island , NC. It connects theAtlantic Ocean to thePamlico Sound .History
The first "Hatteras Inlet" was formed
south of the currentinlet , but closed around1764 . The modern "Hatteras Inlet" was formed onSeptember 7 ,1846 by a violentgale . This was the same storm that opened present-dayOregon Inlet to the north. This became a profitable inlet, because it gave theInner Banks , NC a quicker and easier way to travel to and from theGulf Stream . It was easier to come into this inlet from thenorth . Because of the increase of commerce, Hatteras VillagePost Office was established in1858 . The initial invasion of theNorth Carolina coast, onHatteras Island , during the Civil War calledBattle of Hatteras Inlet Batteries came from Hatteras Inlet. The two Confederateforts guarding the inlet quickly fell.Hatteras Inlet today
The inlet today is approximately 2 miles across, but this distance changes daily because of the convection of
brackish water . Nobridge runs across Hatteras Inlet. A fleet of eight ferries, owned by theNorth Carolina Department of Transportation , provide a free 40 minute ride year round to people want to traverse the inlet. These ferries connectNorth Carolina State Highway 12 between the two islands.References
