Westfield Manukau City is a major shopping centre located in Manukau City, a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand, near the intersection of the Auckland Southern Motorway and Southwest Motorway, convert|21.2|km|mi|1 south-southeast of the Auckland CBD. The centre has a current catchment area of 312,840 persons, and annual turnover at the centre for 2006 was $175.8 m NZD with 7.5 million visitors per year. It employs around 1,460 staff as of late 2007.

History and Development

Westfield Manukau City was not always part of the Westfield Portfolio. Originally opened in 1976, it was fully acquired by the Westfield Group in 2001.

The centre was redeveloped in 1986 and 1992, by then owners National Mutual and Fletcher Challenge. After taking partial ownership in 1998, further redevelopments were instigated in 2003 by Westfield, adding additional speciality outlets as well as enabling upgrades to an existing supermarket within the centre. In a 2008 rating of New Zealand shopping centres by a retail expert group, Westfield Manukau City received three-and-a-half out of four stars, based on the criteria of amount of shopping area, economic performance, amenity and appeal as well as future growth prospects. Recent crime issues (with a mugging-related death in the centre car park) were not considered to be likely to have any lasting impact on the centre's performance.
