The Ottoman Second Army protected the south eastern parts of the Ottoman Empire.

The Second Army was activated upon the Ottoman Empire's entry into World War I in October 1914 under the command of General Vehip Pasha. It was allocated to the Middle East, where it faced a war against Britain and its Commonwealth troops, mostly ANZAC troops. At the time the Second Army was stationed in Aleppo in Syria, which was near the rear of the front line, which by then was mostly in Mesopotamia and Palestine. There was not much action in the Middle East during the time period, as Britain was concentrating its forces mostly in the Battle of Gallipoli.

In 1917, General Mustafa Kemal Pasha became commander of the Second Army. In October 1917 Kemal resigned in protest at Enver Pasha's conduct of the Caucasus campaign.
